The crimes targeting Myanmar refugees have reached Islamic State group-like proportions, a statement from the United Nations Human Rights Commission said Tuesday.

In an interview conducted by NPR, Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein revealed that U.N. has continued to receive reports of arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, rape, sexual violence and torture of the Rohingya people, despite the international community’s efforts to bring attention to the crisis.“I can only speak for my office, and very early on, we were very public about what we were seeing in northern Rakhine. We were not quiet and … we warned that if we did not confront what was happening, that we were going to be facing a more severe crisis. And indeed that’s what has happened.”

According to Al Hussein, his team has tried for years to enter Rakhine and investigate the thousands of claims, only to be denied by state officials.

“We have heard that the authorities in Myanmar claim that our comments, our reports, need to be more accurate,” he said, adding that the U.N. is prohibited from erecting a human rights office in the region. “Well then, they should let us in. Why are they not letting us in and what are they trying to hide?” he asked.

The human rights advocate said the international community needs to put an end to Myanmar military operations and to what he described as some of the “most awful crimes we have ever seen.”

“Some of what we were seeing was almost (Islamic State-group)-type crimes, beheadings and the cutting of throats of young children,” said Al Hussein, adding the immediate repatriation of the nation’s refugees must also be addressed.

The human rights advocate also said he couldn’t understand the behavior of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s head of state and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, adding that he thought she should be doing more to protect the persecuted religious sect.

“It’s mind-boggling, really. For me, when I’m told that she has no leeway, she has no authority — well then, the question has to obviously be asked, what is she doing in a position where she can’t influence events of this gravity and scale?” Al Hussein asked.

“I don’t think she’s used every influence available to her. I mean, we were concerned that there seemed to be incitement that was almost encouraged by her office in the early part of this crisis. And the incitement more broadly across social media has been staggering, really,” he said.

“So, when the civilian government sort of accuses the U.N. of bias and that we are spreading misinformation — well, again, if you have nothing to hide, let us in,” the U.N. human rights official ended.

According to reports, 582,000 Rohingya have fled the country since attacks began on Aug. 25.
